If one or more of those pieces are off then it can cause frustration, striving, a lack of favor, the tendency to prioritize things in an unhealthy way, burnout, and more.
It was 2017 and I was battling chronic illness. It had gotten so bad that I could no longer physically photograph a wedding day.
I heard a whisper deep in my heart, “Clear your calendar for 2018.”
I was heartbroken to lay down the wedding & portrait photography business I had built over the previous 10 years. But, I knew that I had to listen. My heart knew it and my body knew it.
So I completed my booked weddings for 2017 and stopped booking new clients right then and there. I had no idea what was next. I was scared, sad, and disillusioned.
I thought to myself, “God, I built this business for you. I served & loved these people for you.”
I heard, simply, “Trust Me.”
If I had only known what He was doing. If I had only known the healing & alignment that was coming I would have been so full of hope and excitement about the future!
In 2017 I began gaining clarity that God was transitioning me on who I was called to serve. God highlighted a group of people I had already been serving over the past few years. I recognized that was the transition and my missing piece: who I was called to serve. I was using my gifts and passions, but not serving the correct group of people in this new season that God was bringing me into.
The group of people you’re called to serve can change with your season, it can also vary depending on the avenue. Some people will have a more fixed calling, while others may shift as God leads with their seasons, and some may serve different groups of people in different spaces. It’s not one-size-fits-all, it’s a relationship with our Father. Regardless, you will discover alignment when your gifts & callings come together in the right season.
A mistake I made early on in my transition was assuming that once I was aware of who I was called to serve & how that meant it was for right now. Oof was I wrong. I started small and that part was okay, but I began feeling frustrated when I got into striving to make it all come together right then and there. God is both the lamp to our feet and light to our path (Psalms 119:105), but we need to remember that there’s a whole journey in between those two places. Sometimes He will show us the big picture along with an immediate step. But, that big picture place is likely more than one step away. Rest, trust Him. He leads us well.
I began the early stages of serving the people God was calling me to through brand photography & business mentoring. I learned what was needed and what wasn’t and I began developing systems and processes to take my clients through to achieve the results that they needed and desired. You have permission to not be perfect right off the bat. Simply serve your people with love and do it the best that you know how to at the time. Then continue to invest in yourself to grow so you can serve them better.
If you’re finding yourself in a similar place, get very focused. Put on blinders so that you aren’t saying “yes” to every opportunity that comes your way. That can be a major distraction and misuse of your time and energy. Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should. Take every opportunity to God and ask Him if it’s a yes, no, or not right now.
