Have you ever been in the middle of incredibly boring, seemingly-unending work, feeling like you’re toiling and getting nowhere? Yeah me too… both in business and personally. Last year our family moved from our first home to the home where we plan to raise our family. It was a big undertaking especially with two kids under four years old. The home we moved into is wonderful, we love it and are so grateful for it! However, it’s a “fixer-upper”. Every room, every wall in the house needed to be painted.
One day during the first two months of living there I was painting the hallway up our stairwell while my husband spent time with the kids. I think I was listening to a podcast or music and was silently talking with God while I worked and listened. I remember feeling kinda “blah” and bummed about how long the painting was taking. Before the entire thought could escape my mind I clearly heard the Lord say to my heart:
“Don’t despise the work you’re doing today to reach the goals you have for tomorrow.”
It stopped me in my tracks. I think I even said “whoa!” out loud. That word from Him was a rescue in that moment. My heart was heading in a direction of resignation over the work we were doing to make this new house feel like our home. And the work seemed never ending to reach our destination. Immediately after receiving that word from God my heart did a complete 180 and I began to look at each roller brush stroke on the wall as partnering with God to build and create the home we dreamed of.
The same can be true in my business. All the emails, all the “no’s”, dealing with technology that won’t cooperate or glitches in my website. All the planning, coordinating, scheduling. It can all feel unending, like toiling and going nowhere at times. But something shifts when I look at each of those things as an opportunity to partner with God to love and serve others, to create with Him an online space that is representative of my heart, design, and aesthetic. My heart takes on more patience, more trust in God, more hope, and more determination to work towards my end goal, even when I’m not seeing the fruits of my labors quite yet.
My hope for you is that if you’re in a season of work, or motherhood, or difficult relationship, where you can’t see the end just yet… that these words that Our Father spoke to me last summer would be an encouragement to you to not just “hang in there”, but that He intends for you to experience joy in the process, not just in accomplishing your goal.
