The Union Mills Homestead, also known as the Shriver Homestead holds a special place in my heart! It is where my husband and I were married just over two years ago, one of my absolute FAVORITE places to photograph weddings and receptions, and, to top it off, my husband’s ancestors’ homestead! I love genealogy and have a strong appreciation for the generations that have come before me. The love of history was instilled in me by my grandfather who is a huge Civil War buff! I even had the opportunity to travel to the town that my mother’s side of the family came from in Germany while I was there years ago! (Thanks to my grandfather’s and a cousin’s research). Now that I have joined a new family, the Shrivers, I have a whole new family history to discover. And how awesome is it that some of it is right here in my own backyard in Carroll County?! If you’ve never been to the Union Mills Homestead you should go take a tour of the mill and the grounds. It’s a beautiful place full of so much history! And if you’re a bride, or soon-to-be bride, the Shriver Homestead is a fabulous place to have a wedding. Just know they tend to book up two years in advance!

They recently added this beautiful stone walkway. It’s perfect for the bridal party so they have less grass to walk on for their walk to the ceremony site just up this small hill and across the bridge.
There are always a bunch of beautiful plants and flowers blossoming on the grounds. August is my favorite because of all the butterflies that are around!
Below left is the main ceremony site, though brides and grooms can choose pretty much anywhere on the grounds. There’s a darling little pond and beautiful stone structure just beyond it.
I love this view of the mill at this time of day! (below left)
Did I mention I love butterflies? He, he!
